You don't have to do anything but pay for the gears and have them installed,
~$550-$600. The speedometer and odometer is electronic and is governed by a
wheel speed sensor. That sensor comes after the rear end so any
transmission or rear end gear change cannot affect it. However, if you
decide to change rims or tires and the final outcome changes the diameter of
your wheel, then you will affect the speedometer and odometer. If that
happens you will have to take your truck to the dealer and have the new tire
revolutions per mile flashed into the CABS. Since the CABS uses a table in
the PCM and that table contains only 5 entries (at least for 2000), only the
5 most common wheels used by the factory are included in the table. If you
do some odd size the dealer will just have to pick the closest one.

Subject: DML: gears

Hi, I am new to the list and am trying to find out some information on
changing gears. I have a 2000 Dakota that I am going to install a 3.92 gear
in, instead of the 3.55 for a little more acceleration. I want to know if
anyone has done this, and what speedo gear they used to compensate for it.
My truck has the 255.65.15 tires on it, 2wd, V6...Nothing special...Let me
know if possible where to find out about this...Thanks
