A blown headgasket will make the coolant turn to a rust color. When the oil
from the engine gets into the coolant you get globs of light brown "goo"!
When you get it back together use a chemical flush to clean the system out.

Uhhhh....Bye Bye Head Gaskets (in those pictures).

As for the rust, either poor coolant choice, no rust inhibitors, or lack of
servicing. But yes, a leaky head gasket (in time) can rust the coolant
passages as well.
