I have a '97 V6 (same coil) and no...you don't need it on the '97 models.

If any of you have the Accel super coil #140021 in a 97, 318, did you have
to use the adapter harness? I seem to remember someone said they did but
the Accel catalog says it is only needed from 98 and up.
