I used to have a 1994 Mazda Protégé w/1.8 I4 and 5-spd. The car was/is
basically the same as an escort with a different skin. From personal
experience, I'd put money (but not a lot) on the escort if the engine is
even remotely similar. The car is also lighter. I used to spin tires
through most of 1st gear and get a second gear scratch. Didn't take long to
go from a stand still to highway speed.
Now, it was no 0-60 in 5 seconds type of car, but it made you feel like it.
