Hi Aaron,

A two piece design would be tough because I don't see how you are going to
separate the mold from the fiberglass? Your idea sounds good, but the one
problem I see is the use of wood. You will have to use a heck of a lot of
mold release. Otherwise I would imagine that the resin will just bond with
the wood and you will never get it out. Also, if you are using just
fiberglass you will need quite a few layers of fiberglass to make it stiff
enough for an intake. When I built my first heatshield out of fiberglass
and structural foam, we used 3 layers of fiberglass on each side of the
foam. There were parts without foam, however, just 6 layers of fiberglass
and it was pretty flimsy. Not sure how it would support a cone filter.
Being in a circle might help the strength though.... Be sure and use
structural fiberglass like the 6oz variety.

The cone is a pretty tough project. I have been struggling with how to
build a carbon fiber air hat, which has a lot of similarities to the intake
you are working on. The air hat is still my ultimate goal and the thought
of one is what got me started with carbon fiber. Anyway, the nice thing
about fiberglass is it's cheap and you can always sand it down and add more
layers.

<<Hmm, interesting, I hadn't thought of two parts, my latest idea was to
glue
2x2s together into about a 6x6, cut it out of that, sand it down to the
perfect size, all nice and round, then break the peices apart, and use some
tape, in very few places, to put it back together. After that mold the
fiberglass around it, when it has cured, pound out the a center 2x2, which
should go all the way through, this would losen up the outer pieces so that
I
can take them out one by one. Although your idea sounds more simply, I was
planning on insulating it and adding another layer of fiberglass anyway,
this
could hold the two pieces together, I might actually do three pieces, I have
a nasty curve in the middle of my design.

P.S. Anyone else can jump in on this discussion if you have ideas. multiple
dakheads are better than two
