"COLD WATER ON HOT ENGINES=BAD!"
I think the safest way to clean your engine is to
begin with it stone cold, start it up, quickly spray
whatever cleaner you like, then gently hose it down
with it still running. Keep the water away from the
ignition and air intake. And keep the hose (and your
hands) away from the fan.
By running the engine you avoid getting water into the
ignition and discovering that you can't restart the
motor. By starting with a cold engine you avoid the
danger of getting cold water on hot metal and causing
severe damage. The engine warms gradually and helps to
evaporate the water so you don't get any little
puddles in unfortunate places.
cheers,
-J.
