They have been trying to tax email since the start but are blocked by the
fact that federal law prohibits taxation of communications (which is why they
dont charge tax on faxes at your local copy shop). The vast majority of
politicians recognize that there would be no quicker way to kill the internet
and Ecommerce than to tax it.
A more imminent danger is the 40 governor task force trying to come up with a
way to tax internet sales at the state level.
Starting last year here in Ohio the tax forms had a "usery tax form" which
asked you to claim any purchases over the internet for purposes of state
taxation. Luckily, this was a voluntary tax, and in case you haven't already
guessed, I didn't pay it.
