I used to think that too - until I went to Egypt. The danged Egyptians managed to anodize some 4340 alloy steel cannon components. Totally
baffled the QC guys from Watervliet Arsenal who were using a dye-type inspection medium to confirm what they thought was a Manganese
Phosphate coating !
