David, check around w/4WD suppliers and Jeep suppliers for NV4500
transmissions. You can get used or reman units for a reasonable cost. I've
never put an NV4500 in any truck it wasn't already set up for, but I don't
see a big problem putting one in a gen-II. May I ask why you want an
NV-4500?? Building a big 4x4? I am considering putting one in my '00 when my
NV-3500 pukes it's guts all over the road, which shouldn't be too much
longer. What I'm getting at is that if you're looking to build a 2wd Dakota
for speed/performance and were looking for an upgrade from an NV-3500, I
think you're barking up the wrong tree. The NV-4500 has a pretty low first
gear, which would be basically unusable in any kind of performance driving,
and the gear ratios for 2-5 are not spaced in such a way that I think you
would be satisfied with the way it performed. The only reason I'm
considering the 4500 is that 1) I'm not into "performance" or racing, 2) I
look for strength and longevity out of my truck and it's components. It's
clear the NV-3500 doesn't offer that, so I'll be looking to upgrade that
component when it goes out. HTH,

Hello,

Does anyone know where I can get a good, rebuilt NV4500 for a reasonable
amount? I've heard some places don't require a core charge either. Do
they come with a bell housing? Also, has anyone installed one in a GenII
Dak? If so, what has to be modified? Thanks.

David
