A EUREKA Day at the Track !!! [details]

From: Bob Tom (tigers@bserv.com)
Date: Sun Oct 28 2001 - 22:46:40 EST

My son (Dave) and I went to the Cayuga track (now named
Toronto Motorsports Park) on Oct. 28. I wanted to give
it one last try here to get into the 14.6s. Dave wanted to
put the '85 Turbo Intercooled Shelby on the track for the first
time (been stored the last 13 years).

Track: Toronto Motorsports Park
             formerly Cayuga International Dragway Park
             my nickname - Cecil II
             Elevation: about 650'

Conditions: 45 - 50F, 41 - 55% humidity, baro. 30.47", 10 -18 mph headwind

Previous best: 14.70 at the same track on Sept. 15/01

Dave and I alternated our runs. One of us would do 2 consecutive runs in a row
while the other cooled down.

RUN LANE TIME & SPEED
Tailwind about 5 - 10 mph
   1 R 14.492 @ 921.94 decided to skip 14.5s & 14.6s :-)
   2 L 14.662 @ 91.98
   3 R 14.577 @ 92.78
   4 L 14.680 @ 92.44
   5 R 14.579 @ 92.68
   6 L 16.343 @ 87.42 hit rev limiter 4 times before I
                                                     realized I was still
in 1st and
                                                     not in second. Wasted
a 2.07
                                                     60' time !
Tailwind about 10 - 15 mph
   7 R 14.695 @ 94.22 did my burnout at the h2o pit.
                                                     did another at the
tree when
                                                     I overloaded the 3000
converter.
                                                     Front brakes held but
rear tires
                                                     broke loose. Starter was
                                                     laughing so hard, he
had a hard
                                                     time starting the
lights:-) 2.401 60' time
   8 R 14.505 @ 93.07

Tailwind about 15 - 18 mph. Temp. 50F Humidity 43%
Switched from my normal (for this track) 1-2 shift @ 4800
and 2 - 3 shift @ 5300 to the 1 - 2 shift @ 5500
and 2 -3 shift @ 5600 that I used at the Mopar Nats in Aug.

   9 R 14.381 @ 94.60
  10 R 14.313 @ 95.05 NEW PB

Weighed the truck at the end of run 9.
Truck + 3/8 tank = 3,900 lb Front of truck = 2,350 lb
Driver is around 172 lb ... 190 lb with beaver pelts on :-)

                New best
60' 2.028
330' 5.917
1/8-mi. 9.131
                75.69 mph
No 1000' times registered
1/4 mi. 14.313
                95.05 mph

Dave got a best with the Shelby on his last run with a 15.03 @ 95.50 .
He spent most of the 11 previous runs trying to sort out a launch
technique and shift pattern for the fwd, manual, turbo. He was still
having a hard time controlling the spinning street tires in 2nd.
Once it's in 3rd, it really moves, especially through the last 1/4
of the track.

Looking forward to Cecil I on Sat. Nov. 17 (weather permitting).
Can someone lend me a helmet if tech won't accept my
beaver cap (keep the dream alive) :-)

Coming off of cloud nine! Hope to see some of you there.

Bob
