Andy,
  This just popped into my head when I read your post below. I had a
buzzing one time from the location you mention. I found it to be the PCV
valve sticking and buzzing. You can put your finger on it and "feel" the
buzz if that's where the noise is coming from. I know this doesn't have
anything to do with the other noises you are hearing, but may solve the
slight buzzing noise you heard with the hood up. Just a thought. :)
