Chris,
I had this same fuel gauge problem with my '92 dak--3.9L with a 22 gal.
tank. The problem lays in the sending unit. This is attached to the side
of the fuel pump in the tank and to replace requires dropping the tank and
taking out the fuel pump and just attaching a new sending unit. It's not a
hard job--just time consuming (yea, and make sure as much gas is out of the
tank as possible.). The part was not expensive (I can't remember how much a
sending unit is--but has to be less than $100) however, I bet the labor cost
is horrible on a job like this. If you're interested in doing this
yourself, I can give a few more tips to speed the process. Also, if the
fuel pump is loose, I think you would be sloshing gas out of the tank while
driving. Good luck!
And now you can help me...I am looking for the biggest "bang for my buck" in
upping my horse power and torque in my 3.9L V6. I have a high flow exhaust
and K&N air filter. What would be the next step in increasing power? A new
computer chip, a supercharger? Thanks.

Subject: DML: fuel gauge
Hey guys,
My fuel gauge has started to act strange (moving around during driving)
I've noticed that there also seems to be a thumping sound coming from my
fuel tank now when I park. Since I have no idea how everything in the fuel
tank is set up, what does this sound like? Could a "loose" fuel pump be
sloshing around back there, which in turn causes the unit to not know how
much fuel is in there?
Also, depending on what it is, how much would something like this cost to
get fixed?
Thanks,
Chris
