It sure sounds like you have a velocity problem. I would think that the z-tube and 70mm TB would open up the mid and top. I'm not
sure how to fix it but hopefully somebody does, as I would be interested in hearing the fix.

Putting gears into it wouldn't do much good, as you are having problems with the mid and highs. gears would get you into this loss
of
power much faster. Just my $0.02. Sorry I'm not much help.
