A big part of the problem is that its hard to estimate the number
of DML members; the number on the home page is just a ballpark
guess. I can calculate exactly the number of members subscribed
to the normal and digest versions of the list, but the problem
comes in with the folks that read the newsgroup version and aren't
physically subscribed to the list with an e-mail address. Due to
things like dynamic IP addresses, these folks are very hard to
"single out" and count. That causes the count to fluctuate.
