My uncle uses a MIG welder. He took all the vocational classes about welding he could when he was in college, and for him MIG works best. He uses it around the farm all the time fixes tractors and attachments. he once welded the frame of his Mazda truck together.
He's also nice enough to be showing me how to use it, and when I can, I get to practice. I got some a small steel plate and a piece of tube stock and welded it all together, bolted it in the bed. Now it doesnt matter what I load in the bed of my truck, it's not going to hurt the front of the bed.
(Here's a picture, albeit not a very good one)

My cousin is about to finish 4 years at Penn Tech studying welding and he also says MIG is pretty easy to use and will let most people do most of the things they want to do.
