You can check the comperssion, but it will not necessarily tell you there is
a bad head gasket. A bad compression reading could come from several
things. Head gasket, rings, or valves, but it is a good place to start.

I would think that a blown head gasket would definitely cause these
problems,
but so would a bad belly pan gasket. I've been through it twice so I,
unfortunately, have a good idea.
