Here's some info about the 45RFE that come with the 4.7L engine. I met up
with John on the Neon.org during my posts concerning the death of the tranny
in my 2000 Neon. You might want to read from the bottom of these e-mails to
the top. I hope this helps some of you 45RFE owners.

Just to let you all know the dealer replaced the tranny under warranty
(24560 Miles). Due to slipping clutches.

While I'm not 100% certain as to why the manuals would have changed (nothing significant in the transmission has), I would bet the difference is in the maintenance schedule followed. Chrysler usually lists an "A" schedule plan and a "B" schedule plan. The "A' plan is for very light duty driving, i.e. No short trips, no towing, no driving in high or low temperatures, etc. The "B" plan is more like the normal driving use of most owners. If you follow the "A" Plan for oil changes for the engine, you would change your oil every 7,500 miles and the filter every OTHER oil change. On my vehicle? No way! I'd rather be safe and play it conservative. I would follow the "B" plan and have the transmission serviced every 24,000 miles. (I think that's what the "B" plan calls for.) Heat is worse in newer transmissions because of the OD speeds. To help out, the 4.7L V8 / 45RFE vehicles have rather large in-front-of-the-radiator transmission coolers and the 45RFE has two transmission filters in the pan! There is a large traditional style filter like most transmissions and an additional spin -on/off filter like a mini oil filter type. The 45RFE is designed for normal life of 150,000 miles before it's first overhaul, and that is under good old-fashion, beat-the-living-beans-out-of-it Dodge truck daily abuse. You will probably do much better. The 45RFE does not use Bands like the previous 46RE transmissions based on the old A-727. The clutches are applied by pistons so there are less parts to wear out. John,

Thanks for the concern. I do have a question about the 45RFE. I have a 2000 QC Dakota, In the owners manual it says to change the filters and fluid appox every 24,000 miles. In the 2001 owners manual it states the change at 100,000 miles. Was there something changed between the model years? Or did they under estimate the service timing in the 2000 model year? Do you know or can you find out the normal operating temp. of this 45RFE? Any info on the tranny would be appreciated!!

I know a bunch of guys on the DML (Dakota Mailing List) would have a mess of questions for you!

-----Original Message----- I was curious because I'm an Engineer at the plant that makes the transmissions in the Dakota. (with 4.7Ls anyway) Sorry you had a problem with the 41TE in the Neon. Glad it will be covered under warrantee though.

I be talking about the neon. When he said "we'll replace the tranny under warranty" I wasn't going to ask to many questions.
