Could bad lifter cause a lot of noise at distributor?

Ok, scoping my truck with a handy dandy mechanics stethascope it seems like
the best I can pinpoint my noise is frm my distributer, so I was thinking
maybe even a bad bushing or bearing or something... or should I just rule
that out and rule it as either bad timing chain or lifter gone bad and
telescoping through cam?
