as to:

1) off the shelf, the most common gear sizes are 3.21, 3.55, 3.92, 4.10,
and 4.56. there are other sizes available, and you can check randy's ring
and pinion (i think its www.randysringandpinion.com) they have all the sizes
listed there (including 3.73)

2)randy's offers good stuff... i can't tell you anything other than that.

3a)this is not a weekender job... you need some really special tools for the
internals that not all mechanics have. that's why changing gears tends to
be a really big (and expensive) job that most people don't want to deal
with.

... i think that answers b (which is about 4 hours for a trained mechanic)
and c.

3d) cost... for the parts (including a posi unit) i got a quote from randy's
for $425 (without it, you are looking in the $200's for the gears and all
the additional parts), that's plus install, which will bring the grand total
somewhere in the neighborhood of $600+.

hope this answers your questions...oh, and btw, this is only for the rear
end. if you have 4x4 it should be twice that much.

Subject: DML: Rearend ratio questions

With the new tires on the truck, Being 31"s this brings the rear end ratio
from 3.55 down to 3.25. Question are the following

1) What are the rear end ratio sizes available off the self?

2) What brands to look for or stay away from?

3a) Is this work that a weekend hack like me can handle to change them out?

3b) Time?

3c) Tools?

D) and last but not lest... Cost?

Here is a photo of my rear end ;-}
