One thing stands out to me, ". . . the top radiator hose had collapsed".
The hoses should not collapse unless there is a vacuum being drawn on the
system.
As the system cools down and contracts, the volume should be replaced from
the coolant recovery tank.
If the connection to the coolant recovery tank is OK, then what caused the
hose to collapse?
Coolant getting into the oil is easy to spot, ignoring other clues like
brownish foamy deposits; the level on the dipstick will go up. This is a
sure sign, unless the "oil fairy" has been topping off your crankcase at
night.
"Yellow, green substance" sounds suspiciously like partially evaporated
coolant, (fluorescent green).
How tight was the cap when you opened it?
Coolant evaporating to the atmosphere through a loose cap may account for
the deposits as the water vaporizes and leaves the glycol behind.
