225/75/15 on 15x8 rims

Has anyone here put on 225/75/15 tires on the factory 15x8 rims? I just came
back from my mechanic and they couldn't install my snow tires on the factory
rims because the rims were to wide. The tires are rated for 7.5" rims
(widest) and I wouldn't think that extra 1/2" would make that much
difference.
