   Yep, due to the length of the power lead, most winches have to be
operated within 10 feet or so of the winch. The recommended way seems
to be to open the hood then get back inside the cab. (The idea being that
if the cable snaps the hood will help to dissapate the energy.) A
heavy blanket or something similar hung on the wire will help too.

   I sure hope I never get to experience a cable snapping - especially
considering the amount of force it would take to snap the cable on my
12,000lb winch. :-)
