Rich,
Check out http://www.dakota-truck.net/codes
Your '96 FSM should list both styles of code - the "PXXXX" style
codes are listed in the 2nd column, but the first column still uses the
2 digit codes and the '96 will also flash those 2 digit codes through
the check engine light using the key on-off sequence. The catch is that
while the "PXXXX" style codes will nail down the exact problem, some of
the 2 digit codes are a bit vague and require hooking up to a scan tool
to diagnose the exact problem. (For example, code 34)
What I came up with was:
-------------
13 No difference recognized between the engine MAP reading and the barometric (atmospheric) pressure reading from start-up. **
41 An open or shorted condition detected in the generator field control circuit. ***
34 An open or shorted condition detected in the speed control vaccum or vent solenoid circuits. *
or
MUX speed control switch below rated volts. *
55 Completion of fault code display on Check Engine Lamp. (end of codes) *
* Check Engine Lamp (MIL) will not illuminate when this code is stored
** Check Engine Lamp (MIL) will illuminate when this code is stored
*** Generator lamp illuminated
