Check Gauge Light...

In the last couple of days, the "Check Gauge" light/message has appeared on my dash (twice). Both times, the temperature gauge moved to 260 and within seconds went back to normal. Anybody know the reason why this has happened, and what I need to do to resolve it?

FYI: I have a 2000 Quad Cab and it has hit 39,900 miles and should turn 40K by the end of tomorrow.
