Mini Cooper, Volvo XC 90 capture awards
The retro-styled Mini Cooper was named 2003 North American Car of the Year,
and the Volvo XC 90 captured North American Truck of the Year honors Sunday,
Jan. 5, at the Detroit auto show.

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., which had three vehicles among the seven finalists,
was shut out this year after capturing the car of the year honors last year
with the Altima sedan.

The Mini won the car category with 253 points, out of a maximum possible 490
points. The Mini beat out the Infiniti G35, with 210 points, and the Nissan
350Z, with 191 points.

In the truck category, the XC 90 had 180 points out of a possible 400,
followed by the Hummer H2 with 167 points and a tie between the Honda
Element and Nissan Murano with 156 points. The tie resulted in four
finalists for the truck of the year award since its inception in 1994.

The winners were determined by the votes of 49 automotive journalists. The
candidate field originally included 12 cars and 13 trucks.

Each juror had 25 points to distribute among each set of candidates, with a
maximum of 10 point for any one vehicle and only one 10-point award allowed.
Jurors include Automotive News Editor Edward Lapham and Industry Editor Dale
Jewett.

My first humor of the day. A Volvo car as a truck? Hummer is not a truck.
Honda Element is not a truck. Nissan Murano is not a truck? Where in the
hell are the trucks?

Well, let me tie a chain from my truck to the rear of the Volvo and see
which one will pull the other. Or a Terd Tundra......LOL
