When I was on a Dodge Ram email list ~7 years ago, some guy claimed the
truck goes into a fuel-conservation mode when the 'low fuel light' lit. As
is usual in email land, lots of guys jumped on theory and stated it as the
truth (even though they had no clue).

It's entirely possible though...

Completely normal. It comes on so that you have plenty of time before
you're in trouble and you keep the fuel pump cool & lubricated with gas.
  Running well past the low gas light regularly will hurt the fuel pump.
