but they aren't cheap. You may be able to do it cheaper with some
sort of chain driven setup, to drag a lifting arm along a rail,

Jon's right and that's exactly how the cover on the Lincoln Blackwood
works. There is an actuator that mounts right where the elbow on the
hinge is for the cover. The other end mounts to the bedrail. It would
look pretty trick but be sure to use a piece of steel of aluminum to
reinforce the bedrail. The actuator is around $300 bucks per side
though.
