I tried to sit back in the rear and it was to small for two adults.

I'm a fairly real person, as is my brother, and we can fit in the 3rd
row seat of a current Durango just fine. We wouldn't sit back there on
a cross-country trip but for anything up to about 3 hours it'd not bad.
