You'll run out of gas long before you generate enough friction heat to melt
icy roads. Get some weight in the rear to help traction, and by all means
get some decent winter tires.

Tickle the throttle just eough to get moving, but not enough to break what
little traction you have, I used to pretend there was an egg between my
foot and the throttle (as well as the brake pedal!)

Studded tires will keep you movine when everyone else is in the ditch, and
those nylon traction straps (instead of tire chains) are cheap and easy
toinstall when you need them.

Steve
(Now in Southern California so I don't have to deal with winters any nore!)
