I purchased my tonneau cover via mail order, and it was sent via
truck freight. An 18 wheeler showed up outside my house. The cost
was reasonable - I forget the exact cost now, but it was something
like $50 to $75. When I purchased my welder, it was also sent via
truck, and while I don't recall the cost, I do remember it was
very reasonable. (I remember thinking, "how can they drive that
semi out here into the boonies for that price, and still make money?")
It is also often possible to save money if you drive down to the
truck depot to pick up the item instead of having it delivered to
your house. (That's what I did when I ordered a lift, which was
a couple thousand pounds.)
So anyway, I wouldn't rule mail order out - find out what shipping
will be before ordering certainly, but it might not be as cost
prohibitive as you might think.
