That oil is going somewhere Ken, we just gotta figure out where, on the
ground or in the air. To use that much oil, it would smoke like a mutha.

No, I did not install an M1. Tossed around the idea, but it's on the far
back burner right now. Only thing I did with the distributor is take off
the cap and plugs to watch the rotor. It's always possible a sending unit
maybe got unplugged, but wouldn't make me lose oil. Also, it's not leaking
any oil nor burning oil as far as I can tell. If it was burning oil that
much that fast, it would be like a train chugging out that exhaust, I would
think it would anyway. :-) If it was leaking oil that bad, it would have
some where I've let it parked and idle (did this several times at different
places) and I never had any oil puddles show up. No leaks up top that I
can tell, no oil burning up off the manifold, etc...

However, I do remember that shortly after it dropped the pressure that one
time, I was letting it sit and idle, and I believe something belt driven up
front wasn't turning for a few seconds, which I think might be the oil pump
(to the right of the alternator when looking at engine from front bumper).
I'm not sure cause it was dark outside, was looking at it with a flashlight
and as my light came across it, it looked like it wasn't moving then started
up, then the engine started to sputter for a second or so before I could
kill the ignition....

also, you did mention during the motor backwards, and messing with the
distributor some-- whichs brings up the question of the oil pump itself.
