gen 2 vs gen 3 8 1/4 axel

Hey List

  Have a 1996 dakota that I'm helping a local guy convert from a 2.5 to a
5.2. I want to upgrade the rear axel from the 7.25 to the 8.25. What is
the difference in the axels from 96 to 97? I know the spline count changed,
but are the spring perches and such in the same spots? Will this rear bolt
onto the springs of a gen 2 dak?
