   No, they aren't. Although in this particular case, starting the
auction at $8,800 with no reserve and starting it at $1 with an $8,800
reserve would have the same *net effect*, the terms "starting bid" and
"reserve" are two very different things and have been a part of auction
terminology for hundreds of years before ebay ever sold its first Pez
dispenser.

  Rick, you are correct in saying that since this ebay auction has a
starting bid of $8,800 the truck won't sell for less than that (it could
in a "real" auction), but that does not mean that "starting bid" and
"reserve" are the same thing. These are specific terms that refer to
different things; they are not the same.
