Could also just be a loose connection.
I had that happen on a GTO that I had once.

Could be just a fluke.... My bro's 99 Trans Am sais it idles ~300RPMs but
above 1000RPM's and its accurate, and on the other hand, my buddys 94 MX6 V6
stock tach will burry itself past 8K RPMs and the aftermarket tach shows
that its off my ~1000RPM's in the upper RPM range...
It could just be a bad tach....
