I think that if the Colorado has the Ext. Cab with 4 fours (not like the
Quad cab with 4 full doors), Dodge will really have to do something BIG to
sell the Dakota in its current size, like getting a MUCH more powerfull and
full efficient V6 and small V8.

Last word from car-truck.com was that the Dak name will continue, built
on the Durango platform but with super-short overhangs so as to not
encroach too much on the Ram.
But DC cancelling all midsize trucks would make sense, seeing as how
they nixed the 4L I-6 for reasons including but not restricted to "an I6
doesn't give us the performance and gas mileage we want" the same year
as GM came out with a 4.2L I-6 that soundly beats the Jeep 4L in both
departments. So with GM bringing out the Colorado mid-size truck, it
makes sense that DC would abandon that same market out of sheer stupidity.
