<snip>I get that the dead battery is causing the not starting. Now I'm
trying
<to figure out if there's a drain or a failure in charging. I don't want
<to just put a new battery in and drain that one dead too.
OK, I have to go back a ways to remember the procedure for trouble shooting
a suspected short but I think it goes something like this:
Remove the dome light bulb (so you can leave the doors open for the
following steps)
Disconnect the negative battery cable
Connect a test light between the negative battery post and the negative
battery cable.
If the light comes on, there is a short in the electrical system.
Disconnect the harness from the alternator, if the light goes out, the
short is in the alternator
If the light stays on, remove fuses from the fuse block one at a time until
the light goes out and that will tell you which circuit has the short.
After that its a matter of time and effort to trace the afflicted circuit
to find the short.
