   Yep, its not as simple as a single position in the VIN, but
basically how it works out is if the 2nd position is a B (says
the vehicle was made by Dodge) and the 5th position is a G or
an L, then its a Dakota. The 3rd position might have to be
7 also (truck), but I'm not sure - I'm not sure how much overlap
there is as far as Dodge re-using the same letters across vehicle
types.

  In any case, if the VIN starts with 1B7 and the 5th position
is a G or an L, then its a Dakota.
