That WILL make a difference on an 800 mile trip.
Was the Consumers Reports an all highway drive? Or
was it a mix of around town and highway?
Would that have been pre-fuel injection full size
pick ups?
Personally,I do a lot of driving on the same country
roads on a daily basis,and there IS difference in
mileage with the gate down...at least 1-2 mpg,on the
same route day after day.
As for "shaking" the bed apart,I'm not real worried
about it.If I was I wouldn't haul anything in it.
