Just replaced the rack in my car, due to a enormous leak. And the pump was
run dry many times with no ill effects because of it. In fact a rebuilding
of the pump for this car only entails replacing the gaskets and seals. The
factory calls for ATF2, I had originally run a synthetic blend power
steering fluid, and recently switched to ATF3 and am much happier with it...
