I too (purchased from JCWhitney) aftermkt bulbs for my 2000 Dakota
headlights rated at 80w lo beam and 100w hi, roughly a 30% increase in foot candles
over the stock bulbs. I made this change in the spring of 2000 after hardly
a month with my then new truck as the stock headlighting seemed so weak.
There was a definite improvment in night vision. Hi beam I use so seldom is still
something less than spectacular even with bulbs of almost double the wattage.
My factory fog light s are unchanged but, as you say, higher output bulbs
are readily available to swap in those too.
As for other drivers flashing at me, I've never had that problem in that
I insisted my dealer check my headlight and fog light aim to ensure both were
right on. Operating a more powerful bulb does not have to result in an
illegal (ie; blinding to other drivers) light pattern. My wiring, switch, etc.,
have never shown any adverse effect from these more powerful bulbs. The
headlight assembly itself after driving about 30min or so does tend to be warm to the
touch.
Whitney offers these bulbs in a choice of beam color from the basic
standard to the cold blue/white intensity that seems to be stock on imported
luxury/sport models. Seems to me they cost about $10. I bought a spare to carry
in my glovebox
