well, it was bound to happen someday... i got into my first accident. i
dropped a friend of mine off at his car, and as i was backing up, i saw a
green saturn slide into my view. i slammed on the brakes, but too late.
the guy had started backing up after had started, and although i was getting
ready to move forward, the truck was still sliding backwards. he was
backing up (apparently without looking, because the cop questioned him on
it), and i hit him on the back bumper. well, it caused some damage to my
bumper (a couple of scratches and a nice dent), but nothing MAJOR. however,
the guy became a real dick, as he immediately pointed to where i had hit his
bumper, and said that it was caved in, and he would need a new one. so we
called the cops. the came and told the guy that he was SOL, because it was
a 50/50 fault matter, and that the best thing was to exchange information.
i told the guy that i would take my truck in for an estimate (so he knows
i'll be fixing mine if he wishes to fix his), and if he chooses to pursue
this, i'm going to lessen my costs as much as possible. as soon as the cop
left, the guy jumped into his car and took off. my friend (who i had
dropped off at his car) had stayed there, and his first comment to me was
"this guy's an asshole! he was trying to milk you!" just as a character
point, my friend's a 37 year old Navy CB, so he's not a young punk.
moral of the story, drive safe, and look where you are backing up!
