clunk from the rear

Recently my truck has developed a clunk and shudder that comes from rear
when backing up. It doesnt happen all the time, but it does it from time to
time. It happened this morning and i thought that i may have hit my garbage
can or something but it isnt trash day so the can is up by the garage. Any
ideas what may be causing this?? Pertinent truck info: '98 CC V6 2WD
~55000 miles.
