can't win for trying....

took off from home at about 2 today after tearing into the transfer
case again. the gears definitely don't mesh right - the older case has
sharper points on the gears than are cut into my shorter input shaft.
I couldn't get the outter ring gears out of either half, either.

I played with swapping the input itself in the planetary assembly -
while better/quieter it still wasn't good enough.

I went down to Hooze again, and talked to Milo again. he told me that
sometimes those outer rings are glued into the case, and there's really
no way to get them out whole in that case, and taking them in pieces is
even tough while leaving the aluminum casting intact.

so I started chasing a whole case again.... I drove down to John's
Auto Parts, and they found three cases in the Twin Cities. I forgot my
cell at home, charging, so I had to find a payphone to chase those. I
grabbed lunch and filled an empty 20# LP tank while I was at it too -
big mistake!

I then called around to these junkyards, and verified parts
availability, and ran out of time and had to run off to my eye dr. to
verify that my new contacts aren't going to make my eyes fall out.
that was at 15:50.

I got back home just before 5 and couldn't find my list of junkyards -
I finally found it and started calling at about quarter after. the two
closest, and definitely the best deal ($600 for a rebuilt with a 12/12k
warranty) were still there, but locked the doors at 5. the most
expensive used case is also the furthest away, in Delano, and he was
closing at 17:30.

none are open until monday. but the guy at Hickman's in Delano is
coming in to do some work tomorrow, and will give me a call.... I sure
hope he does.

I didn't buy any more Right Stuff, and I'm just about out, so I don't
know how far I can get in putting back together the 231C I bought (I'm
almost out of RTV too). hopefully I can find a home for that. and get
at least some of that $400 back.

bugger.

so I'll spend this evening putting back together a non-HD 231C and get
a center console built, along with cleaning up the shop and storing the
remains of my old case for future spares or cores. if I can leave by
dinnertime tomorrow I'll probably push myself to make the autoshow. if
the guy at Hickman doesn't call, then I'm stuck here until monday
morning.

I'm sure I'll keep ya'll posted =)
