I had changed my forward O2 at 65K miles - looked pretty nasty and one of
the openings on the element was plugged up.

I'm not using the platinums in my truck, and with past experience on my
older cars, never will, but yes my 3923's were gapped at .040. I'm kinda
thinking being a 97 it's time to change the front O2 sensor.
