More than likely it was the wrong fluid...but they claimed that it was
recommended for use in their transmission. Don't know which one though.

I don't suppose you know whose fluid he did use?
That wouldn't surprise me if he used, say, Mobil1 ATF that is supposed
to meet the Dexron/ Mercon specs but is not ATF+3/+4 rated.... However
if it was a synth ATF+3/+4 rated fluid, then I'd be wondering pretty
hard. My assumption is that he just put in the wrong damn fluid.
