   An ounce of prevention... :-) I always disconnect the battery
before welding on a vehicle. Sure, chances are you will be fine
if you don't, but disconnecting the battery is such an easy step
that I feel its just not worth the risk to do otherwise. Also,
before welding on an exhaust system, I like to remove any oxygen
sensors in the vicinity.
