The voltmeter approach is fairly accurate. I've set the sync on quite a few
trucks with a voltmeter then later checked it with a scantool. The
voltmeter approach has allways gotten me + - 2 deg of being dead on if not
dead on. The best way is still to set it with a scantool.
As far as oil pump driveshaft orientation goes, on both the magnum and la
engines the slot in the drive shaft gear is to be pointing one tooth
conterclockwise of straight ahead, as bernd stated earlier. The slot will
actually be pointing at the the number 1 cylinder front intake bolt hole.
