But could that have suddenly made his Dak die on the way home? I guess if
the battery kept weakening...maybe it's a lousy alternator ?

Naa, I already told him about the volt drop check. My guess is the contacts
inside the solenoid, unless the starter armature bearings went and it's
shorting.
