There was a terrific article in last months Hot Rod about making a 500+HP
408 out of a 360 crate engine on a very tight budget.

Thats a very good suggestion Ron. Which brings uo a couple questions:
Why can a 318 be bored and stroked to a 390 (72 additional cubes) and a 360
be bored and stroked to a 408 (only 48 additional cubes)?
Comparing 2 naturally aspired similarily built engins, one a 390 and one a
408, how much more HP/TQ can be gained from the 408?
Thanks for your help
James

Jim.....

If I can make a suggestion........To build a 408, you'd need to use a 360
block and have it bored and machined.

Why Not use the original 318 block and install a 390 stroker kit in it?

You could purchase a quality kit for about what the ported R/T heads run and
get the Truck running then go back later and swap the heads out for the
ported R/T heads...

I'd be more apt to want a good shortblock in the truck that is built solid,
so I could build on top of that when funds permit.

Just my .02....

I'm in Palm Coast, FL. I need to keep this build inexpensive as possible so
I'll probably reuse the lifters, push rods and cam (if it suitable) since
they have only 5000 miles on them. Regarding the pistons, I would
defiantly be interested if they are the right ones to use with the build.

Where are you located? Just curious, may be interested in the 318 if it
stays mostly complete. Also, if you decide to use the MP pistons (.020
over) I have a brand new set I will probably be selling.
