: calendar?
Yep, I suppose we should. :-) I've been thinking about posting
something for a while now, but just never got around to it. Might
as well see what sort of response we can get anyway! :-)
Ok, here goes.....
For those of you who aren't familiar, every year the DML puts
together a calendar showcasing various DML members' trucks. Pictures
are submitted, the DML votes on them and the top 12 trucks get to
be in the calendar (1 per month).
If you are interested in being placed in the running to have your
truck appear in the 2005 DML Calendar, you need to send me photos of
your truck. You can send as many photos as you like, but sending more
photos does not increase your chance of getting into the calendar. :-)
(The votes are done on a per truck basis, not a per picture basis.)
If you would like to send additional shots such as interior or engine
bay details, action shots like burnouts or autocrossing, you are more
than welcome to, as sometimes these can be used as "insets" to the main
picture.
Here are the requirements: It is preferred that you snail mail
me actual photographs of your truck. (Not printouts, but actual photos
that you had developed by a photo lab.) The reason I prefer actual
photos is so that I can scan them in myself, which generally ensures
a higher quality end product. In addition to photos, I can also scan
in slides or negatives, so either of those would be acceptable as well.
However, if the only photo(s) you have are digital (usually because
they were taken with a digital camera), then it might be OK to send
those to me. I say "might" because it depends on the quality (size
and resolution) of the picture. Some digital cameras simply are not
up to the quality standards required for the calendar. The absolute
minimum quality which I can accept is 2200x1700 at 200dpi. (That
works out to approximately 11x8.5 print size at that resolution.)
Note that it doesn't work to take a smaller sized or coarser
resolution pic and blow it up the the required size; that'll look
terrible - the digital camera must be capable of a native resolution
equal or (hopefully) greater than the minimum specs already given
above. If your digital camera isn't up to snuff, what some people
have done in the past is to purchase a disposable camera so that
they could have actual photos developed. If all of the above is
gobbelty-gook to you, you are certainly more than welcome to e-mail
your photos to me to inquire as to their acceptability. I will be
glad to check them out and let you know if they meet the minimum
standards.
If you would like your photos returned, please be sure to include
a SASE so that I can send them back to you. Sometimes people do not
like to send the photos through the mail unless they absolutely have
to. (perhaps they are originals with sentimental value or maybe
you are just frugal and would prefer not to spend the money for
shipping unless you can be sure your truck will actually make it
into the calendar). The following might be a solution for you:
If you have access to a scanner, scan the photos in at a minimum size
of 640x480 or so (72-150 dpi is fine), then e-mail them to me. I
can use the low quality scans for the voting page, then if your
truck is selected as one of the 12, you can go ahead and snail mail
the original photos to me so that I can scan them in at calendar
quality. (Note that if you take this route and for some reason you
cannot get the original photos to me or if they are different than
the scanned-in versions that everyone voted on, chances are extremely
high that your truck will be dropped from the calendar and the #13
truck catches a lucky break and moves up to #12...)
Please mail your calendar submissions to:

Or, if you are sending digital pics via e-mail, please use the
address dmlcalendar@jonsteiger.com.
If you have any questions about any of this, please post them here,
or if you would prefer to ask privately, please use the
dmlcalendar@jonsteiger.com address so that your e-mail doesn't
dissapear in a mountain of spam (putting "DML Calendar" in the
subject somewhere is a good idea too).
I like to have the calendars done in time for them to be shipped
out prior to X-mas, since people seen to like to give them as x-mas
gifts. As such, I do need to set some dates, here they are for
this year:
Submission deadline: 11/20/04 (Saturday)
Voting period: 11/21/04 through 11/27/04 (Sun-Sat)
Winners announced: On or slightly after 11/28
As such, if I do not have your calendar submissions in my posession
by midnight of 11/20 then you will miss the opportunity to get your
truck "on the ballot". (Although it is possible to add a truck to
the ballot during the voting process, so many people will have
already voted that the chances of you making the calendar are
slim indeed.)
Thanks, and I will be looking forward to your pics!
